Gibberish rock song
This clip from 1972 is an Italian actor called Adriano Celentano singing a song with nonsense lyrics that supposedly mimic how English sounds to foreigners. It's surprisingly catchy.
The setup can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU4w12oDjn8
Despite knowing there's no meaning to the words you can't help looking for familiar sounds. I'll swear they mentioned frozen pizza at one point...

These letters were leaked today showing a major breakdown in communication between the French Government and the Irish over the upcoming World Cup qualifying play-off. There’s now a full-blown diplomatic row brewing.

Drunk Guy Needs More Beer
There's a few versions of this doing the rounds with better pictures, but this is the only one I found with the original sound. He helpfully provides his own commentary.
If you want to see just how tenacious the guy really is, the full 11 mins can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c6bjVXLdBM
I'll try and dig out footage of his subsequent visit to Abrakebabra and buying petrol on the way home..

Letters of Note -- Mick Jagger & Andy Warhol
I can't quite imagine Mick Jagger sat at a typewriter doing this himself - particularly as there's no mistakes! I wonder what letters from Keith would look like?
Anyway, this is from a fascinating blog with all sorts of letters. This rant about Elvis Presley in 1956 is pretty good (http://www.lettersofnote.com/2009/10/striptease-with-clothes-on.html). There's also an open letter from Bill Gates moaning about software piracy in 1976 (http://www.lettersofnote.com/2009/10/most-of-you-steal-your-software.html).
Worth a read...

Doctors implant tooth into eye to restore sight
I never expected that a blind person would literally give their eye-teeth to see again, but this unlikely sounding swap appears to have finally happened in Miami.
A tooth is removed, an artificial lens placed into it and it is then put over the eye to allow light back onto the retina. A synthetic base for the lens would be rejected by the body, but I imagine any bit of bone might work as well as a tooth.
I heard the patient in the video being interviewed on Radio 5 yesterday evening and despite the Frankenstein approach it's clearly changed her life. Perhaps it will be toenails for the deaf next?

The Hollow Mask Illusion: Beyond Charlie Chaplin
I've seen this optical illusion once before, but never quite as clearly. Plus the commentary really helps explain what's happening.
So, is it simply our expectation that faces are convex rather than concave, or is there something more compex going on?

How to saber a bottle of champagne
I've never seen this done before, but it's quite impressive.
Having said that, it seems like an awful waste of alcohol. I wonder if it works on Pomagne as a cheap way to practice?
Hidden circles illusion
It took me a few moments, but the circles on the far left & right seem easier to spot. Maybe because the shading on the square is more symmetrical.

Woman tries to shoot down plane for being too noisy
I've long suspected that airport security is often more for show than a real anti-terror measure.
Coming back from Brisbane last year I had two jars of New Zealand Marmite confiscated in case I "smeared it on something" - like toast perhaps? Meanwhile this kind of nonsense is going on.
It may only have been a small local airport, but it doesn't sound like she bothered to hide her intentions on the way through! At least she's now free to have another go. Perhaps next time she can call and book an appointment to give security a fighting chance...

Seven Days Is Too Long - Chuck Wood
A couple of days ago I was in the car listening to Dexy's first album "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels" and was inspired to track down the original version of one of the best tracks, "Seven Days Too Long".
It turns out it's a bit of a Northern Soul classic, and I can see why. I always knew that Dexy's had a habit of finding great, but little-known songs to cover, so I'm going to do some more digging and see what other gems are lurking. I can see the Twisted Wheel and Wigan Casino broadening my musical horizons over the next few weeks.
In the meantime does anyone know anything about Chuck Wood? There's doesn't seem to be much out there about the man himself...

How to defeat the Klan with humour and bravery
Great clip from an interview with Andrew Denton on ABC.
In 1990 Clary became a born-again Christian and actually teamed up with Reverend Wade Watts from these stories to preach the Gospel and teach against racism.
It doesn't excuse the despicable things Clary did in his youth, but I think we can all learn from how Wade handled the abuse & bigotry.

Britney in subliminal shocker
Sunshine Jones (link above) has posted some great examples of subliminal messages in well known songs when they're played backwards.
Led Zeppelin isn't a surprise, the Eagles sort of makes sense and Queen is slightly unexpected, but Britney?
Of course she must listen to her own songs quite a lot during rehearsals & appearances, so who knows how it affected her over the years. What are the odds on other songs referring to hammers and Philips LadyShave?
Anyway, I've not tried the originals for myself, but it sounds fairly convincing. And there must be other examples. Maybe Bryan Adams' blockbuster "Everything I Do" had a message designed to keep it at number one for months on end. I can think of no other reasonable explanation...
Giant Hands Massage Building
This is very clever and the sequence from around 1:45 with the windows is particularly good.

Man Utd 3 - West Brom 5
A classic match from December 1978 when Albion were one of the best teams in the country, if not Europe. This gives you a taste of what Cunningham was all about.
The booing during the game and Fat Ron's post-match comments show just what players like Cunningham, Regis & Batson had to deal with and how far we've come since then.
Let's hope Bomber Brown & Bryan Robson's shaggy perms remain a thing of the past too!
From Brisbane Road to the Bernabeu
Good article from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8149282.stm
I was lucky enough to see Laurie play a few times for West Brom and he had a bit of everything. Pace, skill, balance and a surprising amount of strength. I think the comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo is a good one, although Laurie had better dress sense.
I can also see what people mean about his unfulfilled potential, but perhaps his real legacy was breaking down the racial barriers that existed within football to give us the multicultural game we have today.
RIP Laurie.
